Lloyd Nattkemper, continued
Lloyd is a retired periodontist and dental educator, having practiced 36 years first in Southern California, Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and then in Monterey for over 30 years. He taught as a clinical professor in undergraduate periodontics at the University of the Pacific Arthur A Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco for 9 years and as supervising dentist in the Cabrillo College School of Dental Hygiene for 22 years. Lloyd has served on the Board of the Monterey Bay Dental Society since 1995 and continues to serve, and on the Board of the California Society of Periodontists, Lloyd’s step-dad (as well as his “real” dad) were both talented musicians. Lloyd and his step-dad Howard spent a weekend in the fall of 1968 (before he started 5th grade) on mastering the range of Howard’s 1921 silver Martin alto saxophone. Howard continued to coach Lloyd, and along with direction from band directors through school Lloyd excelled, leading sax sections of concert bands, marching bands, wind ensembles, stage bands, and in dental school got several classmates together to form the “Matrix Band”, performing at many events on the UCSF campus, including several class reunions.
In early 2018 Lloyd was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Glioblastoma, located in his right visual cortex. Lloyd’s wife Dina had died of the same type of tumor several years prior to his diagnosis, Since his initial diagnosis and surgery, he has undergone chemotherapy, radiation, an additional surgery because of tumor recurrence, additional rounds of chemo and radiation, as well as other treatment. All of this has resulted in loss of vision on the left, a reduction in visual acuity, challenges with memory and with cognitive function (mostly difficulty handling information quickly). Lloyd has to practice music ahead of time, sometimes for hours, needs to make notations on music if there are repeats or D.S.’s, and truly understands the value of patience, persistence and perseverance in order to keep playing music. Patience is something Lloyd sincerely appreciates in his fellow musicians!) Lloyd’s thrilled and honored to still play as a member of DMB and hopes his drive and positive attitude will inspire others to overcome challenges, big or small.
